From my balcony in Via Lucana can be seen a great panoramic view on Sassi Caveoso (technically our building is at the beginning or end of the Sassi – it depends on the point of view) and Parco della Murgia on the other side of Gravina.
On July 13, 2019, that view was more interesting because of the thunderstorm that was going drito towards us. An apocalypse! After a warm noon, small Cumulus developed into the dark Cumulonimbus clouds during the day. They were transforming minutely into the shade of gray curtain and moving so fast. As I only watched one episode of Game of Thrones, I can compare it with 3 rd episode (Long Night) of the 8 th season when Living army meets the Army of the Dead.
At that moment, I was standing on my balcony and waiting for the thunderstorm as Living army had waited for the Death. Storm ran over Matera like a virus and a few hours later we saw a ray of light in the sky again.
We seem to have survived and Matera still stands proud! No fear! Temperature is generally below the average for this time of the year. It feels like autumn already! So the main tips are – take an umbrella, rain boots too, and dress in layers. Forecast says that thunderstorms like this one are common in the summer period but we will not give up and continue looking forward to the summer. 🙂
